Pompeii – the ancient Roman city that is still alive.

Pompeii - The Italian Wanderer

Probably most of us wish to have the super-power of traveling in time. Well, there are places that let you experience something very close, and one of these is Pompeii.

Located just outside Naples, it is a must see if you are in the area, but be aware that the site is so wide you’ll need a whole day to visit, and it isn’t guaranteed that you’ll see everything. If you are a sensitive person, you’ll feel overwhelmed by having the chance to walk a still intact Roman street, entering an ancient house, seeing how life was back in AD 79. Here you have the unique opportunity to see it with your own eyes because everything has remained as it was before the eruption of Vesuvius.

I have to admit the visit is extremely touching but beautiful, here history has transformed a tragedy into a treasure.

Some suggestions:

Be comfy. Wear the most comfortable shoes and clothes you have for the time of the year you are visiting. We have been there last September on an unfortunate extremely rainy day, but it haven’t stopped us, if possible our visit has been more magical and suggestive. The archaeologic park is open all year long, be aware that in summer it is very hot in Italy, remember to bring water, a hat and lot of sunscreen.

Plan you visit ahead. We haven’t done it and I am still paying that I did not see some of it most beautiful spots. Be sure to sign what you wish to see and plan your itinerary carefully as the city is really wide and you’ll have to walk a lot from one spot to the other.

Learn about Pompei. Read and read more about it, buy some books about life in Pompei, it will help you understand a lot of what you’ll see and you will discover some interesting things. You will visit the park with different eyes and you’ll bring home more of its magic.

Enjoy your visit. Take the most photos as possible but remember to observe all with your own eyes and not only through lenses or a smartphone screen. Try to deeply understand how lucky you are to walk an ancient Roman street as it was at the time, feel the emotion of walking into a Roman shop and a Roman house. You are going to witness our heritage and you’ll discover that Romans were extremely clever and life was not so distant from today’s.

Now scroll down and enjoy a virtual tour through some of our photos and tell us if you have visited already and what you liked more. We are for sure going back, as we have seen like 20% of what we wanted!
